How to make your house safe on a budget

By the time our son was one year old I couldn’t believe how much money we’d spent on things which he’d grown out of or were bad purchases.

You’ve really got to think hard and try and imagine what the situation will be in a few years.

You can spend money buying catches for all of your drawers or if you can buy handles which are U shaped, simply put a thin piece of wood through all of the handles.

Spend time mounting items like phones on the wall, that way you can keep cables out of the way.

Buy stair gates which you can fasten to the wall / banister, make sure they close easily when you’ve gone through them.

We bought a travel cot so our son could play in it, but he hated it.
So always try things, don’t buy things from catalogues.

Unless you buy an expensive play pen, don’t bother, your child will soon be able to climb out of it, instead try and make one room in your house extra safe.

Put your child in his high chair if you need to answer the door or need the bathroom.

Finally, buy a cot which will convert into a bed when your child gets older.

Fun things to do in the holidays

Keeping your child occupied in the holidays can be a full-time job.

You can’t go out on trips everyday, so its best to plan these dates and create activities leading up to them.

Like a trip to the zoo, drawing pictures of animals and having fun with photos of the visit can provide hours of fun after the event itself.

Always have a camera, a cheap throw-away camera is the best and not expensive if they get lost or damaged.

You could also try and save these activities for rainy days.

Always have a big pile of activities which you child can do if they get bored, coloring books, board games, story books, toys and puzzle books.

Try and make the most of the weather, a trip to the beach in hot weather or fun in the snow, snow men or sledging.

Visits to family and friends can be a lot of fun, you can vary the transport making the journey fun and different. Remember to get your child to take photos.

One more good idea, is to encourage your child to keep a scrap book, they can glue in their photos and add drawings and postcards you may have made or bought.

How to have a great party

A children’s party can be a massive organisational task and if there are lots of children can get quite pricey. Every time you buy something for the party make a wise investment, buy things which you can use again. That way you can build up a collection of items which can be used every time.

Try and make decorations in the early years, then replace them with better items when you can in the future.

One of the difficulties is trying to keep up-to-date with your child’s favorite TV show or cartoon characters, which are always expected at parties. Ensure you know what they like well in advance and have a look at what items you can buy. If they aren’t too expensive and you think you’d struggle to create something similar you may have to buy the item. But in most cases you should be able to create something which will look good and please your child.

Maybe you can come up with something of the same theme which you can’t buy in the shops.

Make sure you buy plenty of film for your camera / camcorder so your child can keep the photos / film and can show his friends.

Try and make the birthday cake or buy a pre-themed cake from your local supermarket and decorate it yourself.

Decide what party games you’ll have and run through them in the room where you’ll have the party so you can remove any furniture which might get in the way. Above all make sure each child gets a prize, this can be candy or small trophy tokens, maybe chocolate gold coins.

Enlist the help of several adults and run through the party plan so that everyone knows what to do in case of hiccup.

How to make sure your child gets a good nights sleep

From child birth, children can have all sorts of problems with sleeping through the whole night.

As a child gets older different issues can arise.

However, some general tips can help through-out.

First consider any current problems, like teething, illness or the weather.
You can prepare a child for these circumstances with medication, different clothing and bedding.

Always make sure that you child is tired, make sure your child has had plenty of fresh air during the day and enough exercise for their age.

Next, make sure you child has had enough to eat and drink, although remember not to feed too near bedtime.

Getting your child to sleep can be helped with a bed time story, music or you can sing to your child.

Also getting your child use to a routine, a certain time or event when always occurs before bed time. Of course the daily routine is also important, a change can cause problem. Making Your Lounge Safe

When your child first starts crawling around you’ll find your life get a lot busier and you’ll have to rescue your child when she climbs on new objects for the first time.

Make sure there are no loose cables anywhere, secure them to object. Buy mains sockets protectors to stop your child putting his fingers in the outlet.

Try not to put sofas and chairs next to other climbable objects like book cases or window sills.

Make sure all your mains plugs for your TV and entertainment systems are out of reach, you may have to build something to make them safe.

Leave lots of pillow around, this often provides a far more tempting target than a couch.
